When Policy Meets Action: Teachers and Lecturers Unite for Sustainable Schools

Saturday, August 23, 2025 – Yogyakarta State University, through its Postgraduate Program, held a Community Service (PkM) activity led by Prof. Dr. Drs. Edi Istiyono, M.Si. The event, held in the Physics Meeting Room on the 1st floor of the Physics Laboratory Building, focused on the theme “Synergy Between School Environmental Policies and Education in Energy Conservation and Waste Management.”
On this occasion, Prof. Edi emphasized the importance of building integration between school policies and learning processes oriented towards sustainability. He said that energy conservation and waste management are not only the responsibility of individuals, but must be integrated into the school education system in order to create an environmentally conscious culture from an early age.
The event was attended by lecturers, researchers, and students, including Dr. Widowati Pusporini, M.Pd., Wipsar Sunu Brams Dwandaru, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dr. Umi Farisiyah, M.Pd., Tyas Wulaningrum, S.Pd., Muhammad Rizki, S.Si., and Nurul Ainunnisa Damayanti, S.Si. In addition, this activity was also attended by high school teachers from various schools in Yogyakarta who actively participated in the discussion. The presence of these teachers provided a practical perspective on the implementation of school environmental policies and the real challenges they face in the field.
The discussion was interactive, covering best practices in implementing school-based environmental policies, energy conservation strategies, and waste management innovations relevant to community needs. The high school teachers welcomed this idea as it aligns with efforts to create environmentally conscious schools that support the achievement of sustainable education.
Through this activity, it is hoped that synergy will be established between universities, teachers, and schools in developing environmentally-conscious education while strengthening the role of schools as agents of change in facing the challenges of the energy crisis and waste management issues.
